Diderot vu par les Nouvelles ecclésiastiques
Abstracts
Diderot as seen by the Nouvelles ecclésiastiques
The journalists of the Nouvelles Ecclésiastiques, which was edited from 1746 to 1759 by Fontaine de La Roche, saw Diderot as “ religion’s most violent enemy ”. Although they viewed him with a certain respect, they attacked him for being the true author of the abbé de Prades’ thesis and the director of the Encyclopédie, an anti-religious enterprise. Diderot replied in the article ENCYCLOPÉDIE, by unexpectedly defending Montmorin, the Bishop of Langres, who was accused of monopoly by the Jansenists ; thus he came down on the side of the authorities. On his death, the Jansenists once again denounced the de facto collusion between the Philosophes and the Jesuits ; but with Diderot as with Montesquieu, they chose their adversary carefully.
